A planning application has been submitted for a new lakeside boardwalk and surrounding public realm at Waterbeach marking a key milestone in the long-term vision for the area.
This planning application sits alongside wider development proposals for the lakeside being brought forward in partnership with Greystar to deliver new rental homes and a high-quality environment for residents and visitors alike.
The proposals bring to life the long-term plans for a high-quality design for the lakeside. The scheme will open up new, accessible public space, improve connections around the lake, and create opportunities for leisure, community use and future commercial activity.
At the heart of the plans is the delivery of a continuous boardwalk that enhances access to the water’s edge, making it easier for people to walk, cycle and enjoy the lake that sits at the heart of the development. Active travel has been embedded within the design, supporting healthier lifestyles and improving connectivity across the site.
The existing lakeside activities including wild swimming and paddleboarding, will continue while the boardwalk is under construction, moving to the western side of the lake, which is intended to become their long-term home. This area will also support future facilities, including a sports pavilion, helping to strengthen the area as a hub for activity and recreation.

Subject to planning consent, work is expected to start in autumn 2026.
