The bridge was officially opened by Charlotte Cane MP, joined by key delivery partners and representatives from local user groups including Cambridge Cycling Campaign (Camcycle) and the British Horse Society.
Charlotte Cane, Member of Parliament for Ely and East Cambridgeshire, said: “I was delighted to officially open this new bridge today. By providing a safe, traffic-free crossing over the A10, it creates new opportunities for active travel, strengthens connections between Waterbeach and Cambridge, and makes it easier for residents to access jobs, services, and the wider community.”
The bridge provides a traffic‑free crossing of the A10, connecting the growing Waterbeach New Town to the upgraded Mere Way providing a safer predominantly off‑road route for the community to walk, cycle or ride between Waterbeach, Cambridge Science Park and the City Centre.
Designed and delivered as part of Waterbeach’s wider active and sustainable travel strategy, the bridge significantly improves safety by removing the need for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians to cross the busy A10 at road level, while also encouraging healthier, low‑carbon journeys for both existing and future residents.
The new bridge enables residents to cycle from the new homes to the city in approximately 25 minutes, encouraging the growing community to choose active and sustainable modes of transport for both commuting and leisure.
Joanna, a Waterbeach New Town resident, said: “The opening of the bridge has transformed my commute. I am now able to cycle without the need to interact with drivers, or waiting to cross the road. It makes my commute into town almost entirely offroad, which is fantastic.”
Joe Dawson, Project Director for Waterbeach, said: “The formal opening of the A10 bridge is a key milestone for the scheme and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring residents and the wider community have access to first-class active travel infrastructure, encouraging the community to choose active modes of transport, bringing both sustainability and health and wellbeing benefits.
“Thank you to Charlotte Cane for opening the bridge and all the other key delivery partners who came out to celebrate this significant piece of infrastructure and collaborative working.”
The bridge has been developed following engagement with user groups and has been designed to accommodate a wide range of users, including cyclists, pedestrians, wheelchair users, families with pushchairs and horse riders.
The opening of the A10 bridge forms part of a wider package of investment in connections at Waterbeach including new cycling and walking routes, enhanced bus services – including the 100 service from the New Town to the City Centre – and a sustainable travel hub providing bike hire and community facilities. The early delivery of key transport infrastructure ensures the community benefit from day one, and sustainable modes of transport are embedded.
