Urban&Civic have published the latest newsletter about the development of the former airfield and barracks at Waterbeach.

It has been a busy few months since the Design Code was agreed to set the quality standard for the first phase of development and the announcement of £61million infrastructure funding to bring forward delivery of early infrastructure, landscape and community facilities. And all of the work has been continuing alongside the Covid-19 Outbreak, which has restricted the planned community events and usual use of the sports hall, Museum and community spaces.

The newsletter updates local residents and partners on the archaeological investigations on site and gives a breakdown of the next stages of planning and delivery that people will see coming forward in coming months. It also features the Grand Designs style transformation of a former shooting range from a windowless shell into a bright and dynamic space for Waterbeach Toddler Playgroup and sets out the future plans to create a “living classroom” for students around each stage of development.

Rebecca Britton, Communities and Partnerships for Urban&Civic, said:

“It’s been such a strange time for all of us through recent months and we felt gutted that the annual events of the Waterbeach Running Festival, the 514 Squadron reunion and Summer at the Beach have had to be been cancelled or postponed. And that all of the community and schools events we wanted to do around the archaeology have had to be put on ice.

We hope this edition goes some way to keeping people up to date, and crucially sets out the next few months of activity people will see, such as the Construction Accesses going in, and some incredible landscaping starting along the A10 bund, which will see over 100,000 m3 of earth moved around to create a new ecology corridor, and the start of a new safe cycling and walking perimeter route for the development.”
