Waterbeach is looking forward to welcoming residents and the local community for its last lake open day of the season on Sunday 21 July.  As well as wild swimming and paddleboarding sessions, visitors will be able to relax by the lake or take a stroll around the lake loop, with refreshments from the Evolve café kiosk.

The sessions are part of a series of pilot events and activities to help develop the long-term strategy to open up the 23 acre lake that lies at the heart of the growing new community. Access to the lake is currently only available through organised sessions, which are being run by Cambridge Sports Lake Trust and can be booked at www.miltoncountrypark.org/waterbeach-lake.

As well as the lake open day, visitors can have a look around Stonebond and Cala’s show homes, pop along to the monthly Waterbeach Community Market in The Terraces and find out about the former barracks’ fascinating past at Waterbeach Military Heritage Museum: including why the Royal Engineers created the lake in the first place.

Fiona Reardon-Rose, Communities and Partnerships for Urban&Civic, said: “The lake open days have proved really popular, and it’s been fantastic to see both our new and potential residents getting a taste of life by the lake. It’s not just about enjoying the water sports but experiencing the extraordinary setting that the lake and woodland provide in this very special place. In visiting the show homes, we hope people can explore how to make Waterbeach their home.

“We’re also running some personalised travel planning. Come and meet our active travel partner, smart journeys, to find out more about how you can travel sustainably, as well as free bike servicing and marking.”

“The summer open days are the first steps to a future strategy for opening up the lake for wider use: and doing this in a safe way, in balance with some of the important nature and habitats around parts of the lake, which we will continue to enhance and protect.”

Throughout the rest of the summer, residents and visitors can continue to enjoy the lake loop and Wild Woods play area, with refreshments available from Evolve café kiosk from 8am-4pm seven days a week (from 22 July).  Waterbeach Community Market is also back on the third Sunday of each month and Waterbeach Military Heritage Museum is open on the first Wednesday and the first and third Sunday of the month.
