The roundabout will serve as the main gateway for the new town. It will also provide an important connection between the proposed new Travel Hub that will include Park & Ride facilities, a dedicated busway to Cambridge and access to the relocated Waterbeach rail station.
The new roundabout will be built alongside the existing road to minimise disruption and ensure the A10 remains open during the majority of the works. The roundabout has been designed to accommodate the future capacity required for the new town and the Travel Hub, and could be made larger if further investment in the A10 comes forward in the future.
The plans have been worked up with Cambridgeshire County Council and Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), who are delivering the Travel Hub, the Waterbeach to Cambridge busway and the relocated rail station.
Paul Mumford, Project Director for Urban&Civic, said: “This roundabout is a key piece of infrastructure that will unlock access to the new town and its sustainable transport network. It complements our wider strategy to improve capacity on the local road network, while also working hard to provide robust travel options that reduce car dependency and promote active and public travel options.
“We’re working hard to do as much of the construction offline as possible, to minimise disruption to the A10 while delivering long-term benefits for both new and
existing communities.”
Paul van de Bulk, Project Manager at the Greater Cambridge Partnership, said: “This roundabout is a great example of how organisations work together to make sure people are able to move around easily. The roundabout will be an integral connection between our proposed Waterbeach to Cambridge busway and travel hub, the new housing and the relocated station.”
